The Positive Behavior Support Training Curriculum (PBSTC) teaches direct support staff and supervisors the principles of positive behavior support while interacting with people with intellectual disabilities in service settings. This Curriculum, originally published in 2004, has been successfully implemented by service providers and agencies across the country and abroad.

Positive behavior support strategies are known to work in dealing with challenging behavior and the PBSTC contains strategies that create a respectful client-staff environment in service settings.

The PBSTC contains 25 training modules in total, 9 of which are designed for supervisors only.  Each module addresses a key set of skills in positive behavior support, and in addtion the supervisors' modules trains supervisors to be effective managers. Each module consists of a Module Summary Sheet, Presentation Outline, Activity Sheets for trainee use during training, and Skills Checks to use to ensure trainees demonstrate skill mastery of the training content.

Since the Curriculum is competency based, trainees are required to demonstrate mastery of skills acquired after the completion of each module with the help of quizzes, role plays, and other activities. Following the classroom training, approximately 45 minutes is required with each trainee in the trainee’s routine work setting in order for the trainer to assess on-the-job mastery of the skills.

Praise for the Curriculum

“The PBSTC is an excellent training tool. The Curriculum includes the acquisition and mastery of trainee performance skills that are essential to practicing PBS in work settings.”
Carolyn Greene, School Administrator, J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center, North Carolina

"The PBSTC Curriculum provides a wonderful base of understanding for staff with no previous training or experience and enhances the skills of well-seasoned staff. The Curriculum is very well designed and is both teacher and student friendly. It is a succint program that allows ample student interaction and participation."
Donna Boyd, Tri-Developmental Center of Aiken County, South Carolina

“We are using the PBSTC as part of our pre-service training program and eventually all of our 600 employees will be trained with this Curriculum. The benefit to clients is the creation of a culture within our organization that treats people as individuals while setting a more supportive and caring environment. I have recommended without hesitation the PBSTC to my colleagues who espouse a PBS philosophy as well as those who are grounded in Applied Behavior Analysis.”
Michael F. Dorsey,  Professor of Education, Director - The Institute for Behavioral Studies, Endicott College
