The American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) is delighted that a number of its members have been selected for recognition for their contributions to the field.
The National Historic Recognition Project: 2000-2020 is an effort by a dozen national and regional organizations to recognize the key individuals who have contributed to the transformation of the field of intellectual and developmental disability within the U.S. over the past 20 years. This project follows the 20th Century Historic Recognition Project, which recognized notable thought leaders in our field from the preceding 100 years.
Nominations for this recognition were accepted through December 2019. Due to the extraordinary situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is not clear when selectees could be recognized at an in-person gathering; however, a commemorative booklet, 2020 National Honors Recognizing Significant Contributions in the Field of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in the U.S. Between 2000 and 2020 is now online that describes the honorees’ contributions.
Recipients of National Honors are recognized for their significant national contributions to or impact in the field of IDD in the U.S. between 2000 and 2020. These individuals or groups were often engaged in nationally significant research, practice, public policy, and advocacy initiatives that enhanced quality of life for people with IDD.
Recipients of the Essential Change Agents honor are recognized for their significant regional contributions to or impact in the field of IDD in the U.S. between 2000 and 2020. These individuals were often engaged in service, public policy, and advocacy initiatives that were significant in their region, contributed to the national dialogue, and enhanced the quality of life of people with IDD.
The project also honored here are the numerous Unsung Heroes who contributed to or impacted the field in the U.S. between 2000 and 2020 and notes their efforts to enhance the quality of life of people with IDD with gratitude.
