Description: People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience complex age-related issues, including dementia-related disorders. Increased support needs can strain caregivers and existing community support systems. Massachusetts is working to enhance state systems, embed dementia knowledge into service networks, and deliver support services that are evidence-based. The presenters will discuss the Commonwealth’s unique approach to the diagnosis, care assessment and support, and training for people with dementia and IDD and their caregivers.
Learning Objectives:
• Describe the assessment process and training supports for people with IDD and dementia and their caregivers provided by the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services
• Recognize the support needs of caregivers for people with IDD and dementia
• Suggest steps to resource navigation and additional supports from both the Aging and IDD service support systems.
Target Audience: Caregivers of people with IDD: including Direct Support Staff, Nurses, Physicians, and others in administrative roles managing support needs or programs.COVID-19 Outcomes Among People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
