COVID-19 Outcomes Among People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Presenters:
Scott D. Landes, Syracuse University, Syracuse
Katherine E. McDonald, Syracuse University

Brief description:
People with intellectual and developmental disabilities, a large and heterogeneous health disparities population, may have risk of more severe COVID-19 outcomes due to: 1) co-occurring health conditions; 2) a disproportionate percentage of the population living in a congregate setting; and 3) the possibility of discriminatory policies and practices regarding access to COVID-19 related resources and care. This webinar will discuss emerging empirical studies that confirm this increased risk, demonstrating higher case rates and case-fatality rates among people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, especially those living in congregate settings.

Target audience:
People with intellectual and developmental disabilities; intellectual and developmental disabilities service providers; intellectual and developmental disabilities researchers.

Learning objectives:
1) To identify the reasons that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities may be at higher risk of COVID-19 outcomes.
2) To understand emerging evidence of increased COVID-19 outcomes among people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
3) To describe public health policies that may affect COVID-19 outcomes for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

This webinar is jointly sponsored by AAIDD and AAIDD's Research Interest Network
