Resource:
Post-Secondary Inclusive Education Webinar from January 2018
Content Overview:
This webinar will consist of two presentations: The first from Ann Marie Licata from Millersville University and the second from Jodi Duke and Grace Francis from George Mason University. The Pennsylvania Inclusive Higher Education Consortium, created through the TPSID grant received by Millersville University in 2015, has developed from an initial membership of three Institutions of Higher Education to now more than 26 members and growing. This session focuses on the development of this network within Pennsylvania, discussing successes and challenges throughout its four year existence. An update on the model program, Integrated Studies, anchors the discussion and provides a theoretical foundation of Social Role Valorization as vital in the critical understanding of inclusion as embraced by Consortium members.
Despite the encouraging increase of students with disabilities attending college, multiple barriers stymie student progress and completion of a degree. In order to learn more George Mason University distributed a researcher-developed online survey to students registered with the Disability Service Office (DSO) at a public university located in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. Participants provided information about (a) the degree to which they felt prepared for college, (b) transition skills that had a positive impact on their preparedness for college, (c) skills in which they lacked or would have benefited from, (d) the most commonly accessed services in college, (e) perceptions of the effectiveness of existing services, and (f) areas in which the required additional support. Participants also provided information about their perceptions of professional-family communication, as well as recommendations related to high school and college support strategies and meaningful family involvement.
