Supported Decision-Making: From Justice for Jenny to Justice for All

Content Overview:

How would you feel if you weren't allowed to make decisions about your life? What if someone had the power to tell you where to live, who to spend time with, and what to do? What if that person had control of your money and health care? Isn't that hard to imagine?

These are several questions, among others, to explain the importance of using supported decision-making (SDM) for people with disabilities as an efficient alternative over guardianship. Jonathan Martinis, J.D., will provide insight on supported decision-making, using the book that he and Peter Blanck co-authored as the base canvas for this webinar. The book is available free on Kindle unlimited. Access link to the book: https://www.amazon.com/Supported-Decision-Making-Justice-Jenny-ebook/dp/B07YQCK2VX

In this AAIDD and AAIDD SECP co-hosted webinar, Mr. Martinis will cover supported decision-making, and how it can improve the independence, self-determination and quality of life of people with disabilities. Then, using the Hatch legal decision as an example, he’ll give practical tips on how to use discuss, plan for, and implement SDM in daily life.

Presenter: Jonathan Martinis, JD, Syracuse University

This webinar is being co-hosted by AAIDD and AAIDD's Student and Early Career Interest Network.
