End of Life and Loss

4.20.20 Webinar Resources

Content Overview:

In these challenging times, illness and death are topics of daily conversation among individuals and in the media.  People with intellectual disability are experiencing loss through the closure of their normal daily activities (school, work, day programs) and disruption of their social connections.  Many people with intellectual disability will need support to understand and cope with these issues.
International researchers Professor Roger Stancliffe (Australia) and Professor Sue Read (England) have led multiple research projects on end-of-life issues, bereavement, and loss for people with intellectual disability and their caregivers.
In this webinar, Roger and Sue will address these issues and what can be done about them, by:

1. Describing major research findings about understanding and planning for end of life by people with intellectual disability.

2. Introducing and demonstrating a major, free online resource Talking End of Life (TEL) …with people with intellectual disability  https://www.caresearch.com.au/TEL/  TEL is designed for users to gain the knowledge, skills, resources and confidence to help people with intellectual disability understand and plan for end of life.

3. Describing effective approaches to help people with intellectual disability deal with loss and grief.

4. Providing a list of useful resources about loss and end of life, designed specifically for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The webinar will conclude with a brief Question and Answer session.
